I live in western Oregon and you find these in the woods. They are also known as Indian Pipe, Ghost Plant, and Corpse Plant and have a parasitic relationship with both a specific type of fungus and certain trees, taking nutrients from both and giving nothing in return. Several years ago we had two pop up in our front yard between an azalea bush and some day lilies. They didn’t return the next few years, but about two hours ago I was watering flowers in the front yard and found [this](http://i.imgur.com/MWsmu96.jpg). I have never seen them in anyone’s front yard before.
