Endless questions are totally fine, it’s actually quite nice to have interactions with people off the ice to remind me that what I am doing is actually pretty cool, it’s easy to let it become the everyday mundane.
I grow tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, bok choy, peppers, mint, thyme, swiss chard, basil, pumpkin, cantaloupe, watermelon. The lettuce has a hard time sprouting because my seeds are 3+ years old and have dried out too much. We have literally 0% humidity in the station. I tried carrots and strawberries but the carrots wouldn’t sprout and the strawberries won’t produce….. I had a pumpkin plant that was going to be ready for halloween but it died, so that was sad. The plan is to carve a watermelon because those have really taken off and we have 10 small watermelon (we’ve eaten 5 already).
The set up is four systems that recirculate, 3 of which are fed from nutrient/base tanks, one is fed by hand. Two are deeper troughs and two are a system of multiple shallow trays. Not sure what else to say but if you have more questions I’ll try to answer them.
Energy use isn’t really a problem because we have multiple high energy telescopes operating here and a little greenhouse is pretty much negligible in comparison.
